Privacy Policy
Last Updated: August 10, 2026
At Fret Not, your privacy is our priority. This Privacy Policy explains how the Fret Not mobile application ("App") collects, uses, and protects your information.
Information We Collect
No Accounts, No Personal Identity
Fret Not has no accounts and no login, and your use of the App is anonymous. We do not collect your name, email address, phone number, precise location, contacts, or photos, and we never ask you to sign up or sign in. The information the App does handle falls into the categories described below.
Data Stored on Your Device (Private)
The following information is stored locally on your device. Aside from the anonymous song sharing described below, it is not transmitted to our servers:
- Your Personal Song Library: All songs you add, including titles, artists, chords, lyrics, notes, and strumming patterns
- Custom Chords: Any custom chord fingerings you create
- Lists and Favorites: Custom lists you create and songs you mark as favorites
- Tab Links: URLs to guitar tabs you save for reference
- App Settings: Your preferences and configuration choices
Your Privacy is Our Priority: There are no accounts and no login — your identity stays anonymous. Your notes, lyrics, custom chord fingerings, and any songs you enter manually stay on your device and are never sent to us. For songs you link to Spotify, some anonymous song information is shared by default to improve chord suggestions for everyone; you can turn this off at any time in Settings (see below).
Anonymous Identifier (Support ID)
When you first open the App, it generates a random anonymous identifier (a UUID) and stores it on your device. This identifier:
- Contains no personal information and is not linked to your real-world identity.
- Is not used for third-party advertising or for tracking you across other apps or websites.
- Is attached to anonymous analytics and subscription records so we can measure how the App is used on a per-install basis and help you if you contact support.
- Is shown in the App under Settings as your "Support ID," which you can share with us when you reach out for help.
Because it is an identifier, we disclose it here for transparency — even though it never identifies you personally.
Anonymous Song Data & Chord Improvement (On by Default, Optional)
To build and improve the chord suggestions that help everyone who uses Fret Not, the App anonymously shares information about songs you save that are linked to Spotify. This sharing is on by default, and you can turn it off at any time.
- Only Spotify-linked songs: When you save a song that is linked to a Spotify track, the App submits the Spotify track ID, song title, artist, the chords, the capo position, and the tuning. Songs you enter manually (not linked to Spotify) are never submitted.
- How our suggestions perform: We also record information about the chord suggestions themselves — the chords our system suggested, the chords you ultimately kept, whether you edited the suggestion, the difficulty level, and a confidence value. This helps us measure and improve the accuracy of chord suggestions over time.
- Anonymous: This information is associated only with the anonymous identifier (Support ID) described above — never your name or personal identity. The Spotify track ID may also be attached to related analytics events.
- Where it goes: This data is stored in our own secure database (Supabase) and is never sold or shared outside the Fret Not app ecosystem.
- Opt-out: You can disable this at any time in Settings under "Share Songs Anonymously."
Anonymous Usage Analytics
We collect anonymous usage data to understand how the app is used and improve features:
- Whether songs are added manually or via Spotify
- Whether users create custom chords
- Whether users apply chord suggestions
- Whether users add strumming patterns or notes
- Whether Premium is active (an anonymous Premium vs. free flag only)
This analytics data is collected using Firebase Analytics (Google Analytics for Firebase), Amplitude (Amplitude, Inc.), and our own secure database (Supabase). These services associate events with the anonymous per-install identifier (Support ID) described above so we can measure aggregate usage; this identifier is not tied to your name, account, or any personal identity, and we do not use it to track you across other apps or websites, or for advertising.
Important: This data contains no personal information, notes, lyrics, or contact details, and is never linked to your real-world identity. It tracks feature-usage patterns to help us improve the App. For songs you link to Spotify, an anonymous Spotify track identifier may be attached to certain events (see "Anonymous Song Data & Chord Improvement" above).
Session Replay / Screen Recording (Amplitude)
To better understand how people navigate the App and to improve its design, the App records anonymous session replays (screen recordings of in-app activity) through Amplitude (Amplitude, Inc.). A session replay is a reconstruction of on-screen activity — the layout of screens, your taps, and how you move between screens — not a camera, microphone, or audio recording.
- On-screen text is masked: We apply conservative masking, so readable content such as song titles, notes, lyrics, and anything you type is not visible in recordings. Replays capture the app's layout, taps, and navigation — not readable content.
- Payment screens are excluded: Purchase and payment screens are handled by Apple's system interface and are never captured in session replays.
- Anonymous: Recordings are associated only with the random, per-install identifier described above — never your name or personal identity — and are never used for advertising or cross-app tracking.
Website Analytics
Our website (fretnot.app) uses Google Analytics to help us understand how visitors interact with our landing page. This data is used solely to improve the website experience and does not include any personal information from your App usage.
How We Use Your Information
Local Storage
All data you enter into Fret Not is stored locally on your device using iOS UserDefaults. This data never leaves your device unless you enable iCloud Sync (see below).
iCloud Sync (Optional)
If you choose to enable iCloud Sync:
- Your song data, lists, and favorites are synchronized to your personal iCloud account using Apple's NSUbiquitousKeyValueStore.
- This data is stored in your own iCloud storage and is not accessible to us or any third parties.
- Syncing occurs automatically between your devices signed in to the same iCloud account.
- You can disable iCloud Sync at any time through your device's iCloud settings.
Microphone Access
The App requests microphone permission solely for the guitar tuner feature:
- Audio captured by the microphone is processed in real-time on your device to detect guitar pitch.
- Audio is never recorded, stored, or transmitted off your device.
- You can revoke microphone access at any time through your device's Settings.
Spotify Integration
When you use Spotify features in the App:
- The App communicates with Spotify's API through our secure backend server (hosted on Netlify) to search for songs and import playlists.
- We only access publicly available Spotify catalog data (song titles, artists, album art) that you choose to import.
- We do not access your Spotify account, listening history, or personal data.
- No Spotify authentication tokens or credentials are stored in the App or on our servers.
- The backend server only stores API credentials required to communicate with Spotify on behalf of the App.
AI-Powered Chord Lookup
When you look up chords for a song, the App uses an AI service to identify them:
- The App sends the song's title, artist, and a detected musical key to our secure backend server (hosted on Netlify), which forwards them to Anthropic's Claude API to identify the chords. The service may also perform a web search to help verify the answer.
- Only the song title, artist, and detected key are sent. No personal information, account, or device identity is included.
- Anthropic processes this data solely to return chord results and is subject to its own Privacy Policy.
- Results may be cached, both on your device and on our backend, so repeated lookups of the same song don't need to be re-sent.
Subscriptions & Payments
The App offers "Fret Not Premium," an auto-renewable subscription available in monthly and annual options, sold through Apple's App Store:
- All payments and billing are handled entirely by Apple (App Store / StoreKit). We never see, receive, or store your payment-card or billing details.
- No account or login is required. Your subscription entitlement is verified on your device through Apple's StoreKit.
- For subscribers, we store subscription information in our own secure database (Supabase), keyed to the anonymous identifier (Support ID) described above: your subscription status (free or premium), the plan, the product identifier, the expiration date, the environment, and Apple's original transaction identifier. We use this to count how many people subscribe and to help you if you contact support. Apple's App Store Connect remains the source of truth for billing.
- Subscriptions automatically renew unless cancelled, and can be managed or cancelled at any time through your Apple ID / App Store account settings.
Data Sharing
We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information with third parties.
Data transmission occurs only in the following cases:
- To Apple (App Store / StoreKit): Subscription purchases and payment processing are handled by Apple. We never receive your payment-card details
- To iCloud: If you enable iCloud Sync, your data syncs to your personal iCloud account (managed by Apple)
- To Spotify: When you search for and link songs, your song search queries and track lookups are sent to Spotify's API (through our secure backend) to retrieve public catalog metadata (song titles, artists, album art)
- To Anthropic (Claude API): When you look up chords, the song's title, artist, and detected key are sent through our secure backend to Anthropic's Claude API to identify the chords. No personal information or identity is included
- Anonymous Song Data (Supabase): Unless you opt out, when you save a Spotify-linked song the Spotify track ID, title, artist, chords, capo, and tuning — plus how our chord suggestions performed — are sent to our secure database (Supabase), keyed to your anonymous identifier, to improve chord suggestions. Manually-entered songs are never submitted. This data is never sold or shared outside the Fret Not app ecosystem
- Subscription Records (Supabase): For subscribers, subscription status, plan, product identifier, expiration, environment, and Apple's original transaction identifier are stored in Supabase, keyed to your anonymous identifier
- Anonymous Analytics: Usage patterns are sent to Firebase (Google Analytics for Firebase), Amplitude (Amplitude, Inc.), and our secure database to help us improve the app. No personal information, notes, or lyrics are included; for Spotify-linked songs an anonymous Spotify track identifier may be attached
- Anonymous Session Replays: Masked screen recordings of in-app layout, taps, and navigation are sent to Amplitude to help us improve the app's design. On-screen text is masked, payment screens are excluded, and no personal information or identity is included
Data Storage and Security
Your data is stored in two locations:
- On Your Device: Your personal song library, custom chords, and settings are stored locally on your iPhone/iPad using iOS's secure storage mechanisms
- Our Secure Database (Supabase): Anonymous usage events, anonymous Spotify-linked song data and chord-suggestion performance data, and subscription records are stored in Supabase — a secure cloud database with industry-standard encryption — keyed to your anonymous identifier and containing no personal identity
- Our Backend (Netlify): Chord lookup results (song title, artist, key, and the returned chords) may be cached on our backend so repeated lookups don't need to be re-sent. This cache contains no personal or identifying information
We implement industry-standard security measures:
- All personal data stays on your device using iOS's secure storage
- iCloud Sync uses Apple's encrypted storage and transmission protocols
- All communication with our servers uses HTTPS encryption
- Anonymous data is stored with encryption at rest and in transit
Children's Privacy
Fret Not is suitable for users of all ages. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. The App does not require user accounts or personal information to function.
Your Rights & Controls (GDPR & CCPA)
You have full control over your data:
- Access: All your personal data is accessible within the App. You can request a copy of any anonymous data associated with your Support ID
- Delete: You can delete individual songs, lists, or all local data by deleting the App. You can request deletion of the anonymous records associated with your Support ID from our database
- Rectify: You can request correction of any inaccurate data
- Export: Your data is stored in standard formats on your device and iCloud (if enabled)
- Share Songs Anonymously: Anonymous sharing of Spotify-linked song data is on by default; you can turn it off any time in Settings under "Share Songs Anonymously"
